What’s the Difference Between HIPP Bio and HIPP Bio Combiotik®?

If you’ve browsed our shop recently, the number of formulas available may have overwhelmed you. The team at OrganicBaby.la knows how hard it can be to differentiate the differences between each formula, especially when discussing HIPP Bio Organic infant

formula and HIPP Bio Organic Combiotik® formula. Although these two baby formulas share similar names and some similar ingredients, there are a few key differences between the two.

Prebiotics

Breast milk contains prebiotics, which help to “fertilize” and nourish good gut bacteria. Cow’s milk does not contain prebiotics and because most formulas are made with cow milk, they don’t contain prebiotics. HIPP Bio Organic formula does NOT contain prebiotics. However, HIPP Bio Organic Combiotik® formula does contain a prebiotic fiber: galactooligosaccharides. These fibers mimic the prebiotic fibers found in breast milk.

If your baby has a sensitive tummy or has been on antibiotics, a formula with prebiotics is beneficial for gut health.

Probiotics

Probiotics are good gut bacteria that help keep the digestive system properly functioning. HIPP Bio formula does not contain probiotics, but HIPP Bio Combiotik® does.

Why would it be beneficial to have probiotics in a formula? If your child was delivered via C-section or was on antibiotics, the levels of good gut bacteria present are usually lower than a baby born vaginally. Babies born vaginally receive a healthy dose of probiotics as they pass through the vaginal canal. The introduction of probiotics in the tummy can help improve digestive functioning and reduce stomach sensitivities.

Starch

Starch is often used in infant formulas as a source of carbohydrates. Although most babies tolerate starch well, some may experience stomach discomfort and gas when consuming starch. HIPP Bio formula contains starch and HIPP Bio Combiotik® does not.

If your baby has a sensitive tummy or is experiencing tummy discomfort, choosing a starch free formula like HIPP Bio Combiotik® may be the better option.

Size and Price

HIPP Bio Organic formula is slightly less expensive than HIPP Bio Organic Combiotik® infant formula and contains more dry formula per package than HIPP Bio Combiotik®.

Both HIPP Bi Organic and HIPP Bio Organic Combiotik® formulas are excellent choices, however, if your baby has a sensitive tummy or was on antibiotics, HIPP Bio Combiotik® may be the better choice for improving gut health. Both formulas are made without the use of growth hormones, added sugars or artificial colors. And, both formulas are made in Europe where food-manufacturing guidelines are stricter than U.S. guidelines.
