Vitamin C is an important nutrient that you can get from our morning orange juice or the fruits you eat throughout the day. You may eat red and green peppers or kiwifruit, but your baby has not been introduced to those foods yet. Should you consider a vitamin C supplement for your little one?


What are the Benefits of Vitamin C?


Vitamin C is the antioxidant that boosts your immunity. When you start feeling a sore throat or a runny nose, you are likely to go for fruits and vegetables that are high in the vitamin or even a supplement. Vitamin C is also important to the building blocks of your body. This includes:

  • growth, development, and repair of body tissue
  • aids the formation of collagen that strengthens skin and its elasticity
  • helps the absorption of iron and calcium
  • may help prevent cardiovascular disease
  • assists in wound healing
  • keeps your cartilage, bones, and teeth healthy and strong


How Much Vitamin C Does Your Baby Need?


Breast milk and infant formula have plenty of vitamin C that your baby needs. During the first six months of life, your baby needs about 40 mg of vitamin C a day. If you are nursing and have a balanced diet that includes foods rich in vitamin C, your baby will not be deficient. Infant formula provides 8 mg of the vitamin for every 100 calories. After six months, your baby will need about 50 mg of vitamin C daily. By this point, your little one will be trying new foods and purees that will contribute to their vitamin intake.

Doctors will not recommend a vitamin C supplement for your baby so long as they are healthy and thriving. If you are nursing and have a malabsorption disorder like Crohn's disease, you should talk to your pediatrician to make sure that your baby is getting enough of the vitamin.


What are Signs of Vitamin C Deficiency?

Vitamin C deficiency is rare in the United States. If your child is a picky eater or has issues with absorbing the vitamin in their body, they may have symptoms of scurvy. Those signs include:

  • bleeding gums
  • nosebleeds
  • muscle cramps
  • tiredness, fatigue, or weakness
  • sores and wounds take longer to heal
  • physical growth may slow

Can You Have Too Much Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is generally a safe vitamin because it is water-soluable. If there is too much in your system, you body will remove excess in your urine.
