Is it Ok to Formula Feed A Premature Baby?

When your little one comes along earlier than expected, you want to feed them the best to help them thrive. Is formula good enough?

A premature baby is one that is born before they reach full term. These preemies have a lot more developing to do. Often they have a stay in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Parents know that the antibodies and other nutrients in breast milk can help them take on any challenge that comes their way. Can baby formula meet that need?

Problems with Breastfeeding a Premature Baby

In spite of all efforts and best intentions, some mothers cannot nurse after delivering a preemie. If they have undergone surgery, their body needs to recover. Some hospitals are slow to bring the pump to the mother. It can take 48 hours after delivery in some cases. Mothers who are on certain medications including magnesium sulfate have to dump their breast milk because it is not fit for consumption. If you are able to provide your preemie with any breast milk, you have already given them a great deal.

Benefits of Formula-Feeding a Premature Baby

Your hospital already has formula ready to go for your baby, however, you can ask to bring in your own if you have a preference. Most premature babies will start on a special formula that has extra calories to help them grow and develop. Organic baby formula gives your baby the nutrition they need without the additives and toxins they don't need or can hinder their development.

For the first few months, your baby needs to have ready-to-feed or liquid concentrate baby formula because it is the most sterile. Powder formula is the most economical, but it also has a higher risk of bacteria since it is opened for about a month at a time. Since your baby can be at a higher risk of infection and sickness during the first few months, you want to keep them as healthy as possible.

If you wanted your baby to start with breast milk, but could not produce for whatever reason, do not let stress get to you. There is no guilt in choosing baby formula for your little one, especially when that baby formula is organic.
